Internal Family Systems

Internal Family Systems is a therapy philosophy and practice that believes all humans have healing energy at their core that cannot be damaged or destroyed.

This energy is:

Compassionate

Curious

Courageous

Clear

Calm

Creative

Connected (to self and others)

IFS also proposes that our mind isn’t just one singular entity, but is made up of many parts.

(For example - an inner critic, an artistic part, a dreamy part, a part that gets very distracted or overwhelmed in the face of multi-step tasks.)

All of our parts are trying to help us in some way, and in the process they end up blocking our Self-energy.

The goal of IFS therapy is to connect your parts to the Self-energy inside you that can be of help to them. When we learn more about why these parts do what they do, and help them understand there is healing energy already present in you, they don’t have to work so hard.

In terms of ADHD, IFS gives us a completely different take on distracted parts - seeing them as just trying to help you with something. We can be curious about them and have a more compassionate stance towards why your mind does what it does.
