Dance / Movement Therapy

New Group Starting Soon!

Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) is the use of movement and dance elements to meet the goals of psychotherapy.

Many of the core qualities in dance - rhythm, body expression, sensing a movement impulse, shared rhythmic synchrony - can be therapeutic, and connect us to a different way of knowing and relating.

In DMT, we engage in movement and shared improvisation exercises that loosen up our analytical minds and connect us to a space of play and flow. In a flow state, we may be more open to discovery, feel more present in the moment, or see connections that we otherwise wouldn’t have noticed.

The beginning and end of a Dance/Movement Therapy session might feel similar to talk therapy - checking in to start, verbal processing to integrate what you learned - but the central part of the DMT session includes learning and exploration through movement

Movement is a great tool to help us process our complex thoughts and emotions since it often can be hard to express them with words. When using DMT with folks with ADHD, I find it helps by unlocking a creative flow state that is nourishing for ADHD brains.
