This workshop is for you if you are an

  • Adult (18+)

  • with ADHD (diagnosed by a professional, self-diagnosed, or just a hunch),

Who:

  1. Is struggling with any of these common ADHD problems:

  • Extreme fluctuations in motivation that make it difficult to get anything done predictably,

  • Feeling disorganized,

  • Feeling overwhelmed by your tasks or emotions,

  • Intense pain upon being rejected or perceiving rejection,

  • Difficulty planning ahead for important events or commitments in your life,

  • Problems with sleep,

  • Losing track of time and missing important deadlines or responsibilities,

  • Lateness that causes problems with others,

  • Sudden huge emotions that impact your relationships,

  • Hyperfocus that eats up the time you were supposed to be using to work on something else,

  • Intense fear of failure or rejection that causes you to miss out on opportunities you’re longing to experience

  • Intense self-criticism and discouragement when you try a new ADHD strategy but it only works once then never again

  • Stress in your relationships due to any of the above issues

2. Is feeling isolated or alone in these struggles and keep asking yourself, “why does it seem like everyone else can do this but me?”

3. Is feeling frustrated that all the cognitive strategies you’ve been taught are swirling around in your head, and nothing’s really sticking long-term. At baseline you’re feeling dysregulated and scrambled, which makes it hard to implement anything

You may also be someone who:

  • Has experienced increased focus/clarity/calm after physical activity, or are curious to see how it impacts you

  • Have experienced increased feelings of compassion when connecting with others who share similar struggles, or are curious whether it will help you

  • Are open to exploring play and creativity as a means of accessing a wise brain state

Additionally, you may be someone who embodies an lived experience that is targeted by the incoming administration (an immigrant, BIPOC, queer, trans, a woman, chronically ill, disabled, a person speaking out against genocide, many more…) and this is causing your nervous system to be increasingly activated, worsening your ADHD symptoms and making it hard to get by day to day.

Or, you are someone who loves and cares about people in that first category, so you’re having a similar issue (fight/flight/freeze > increased ADHD issues).

Research shows us that ADHD brains have reduced activation in the front brain (pre-frontal cortex), the part that does all those helpful management things like planning ahead, prioritizing, filtering out information, rationalizing emotions, etc.

So, we need an extra boost to help increase the activation in that front part of our brain, to manage the basics of our lives.  (That’s why psychiatric medications for ADHD stimulate the brain chemicals that help your pre-frontal cortex do all that work).

What kinds of activities can give us a boost of those brain chemicals, to put us into the kind of mind-state where we feel empowered to face our complex problems with calm, curiosity, and courage?

The boosts I’m most excited about are:

  1. Movement

  2. Connection / Community

  3. Play and Creativity

In this workshop, we will:

  • Use dance and group movement activities to subtly shift our brain states towards openness, clarity, playfulness, flexibility

  • Explore specific ADHD concerns with the approach I use with my therapy clients - “detective-mode” - a curious mind state that is open to possibility but also grounded in what we know about the ADHD brain

  • Have space to share and connect to others with similar struggles

You will hopefully come away with:

  • A better sense of how these factors affect your brain (movement, connection, creativity)

  • A feeling that you’re not alone in this

  • Increased knowledge of some of the reasons your brain does what it does

  • Some guiding questions to help you approach your next conundrum

  • Fun memories and new connections!
